Coimbra is a medieval capital of Portugal and is also home to the oldest University in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world. The city has great history dating back to Roman times, the grave of the Kings Afonso Henriques and Sancho I, the first Portuguese Kings, is also in Coimbra as well as world famous Fado singing, unique to this area as unlike in Lisbon, it is sang by a man and not woman which can be experienced during your tour in the narrow street of the old town.

All in all, Coimbra is a history lesson for Portugal and must be visited to enjoy and appreciate it.

Wear sensible shoes because Coimbra’s steep alleys are covered in polished cobbles and can be slippery but are well worth the trip.
