The Treasures of Cyprus

Home / Northern Cyprus/ Kyrenia

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Besparmak (Five Finger) Mountains, Kyrenia (Girne) is known to have the Mediterranean’s most picturesque harbours and is the most popular resort on the north of the island where population is mainly Turkish Cypriots since the division of the island in 1974.

This charming typically Mediterranean small town is sandwiched between the beautiful slopes of Five Finger Mountains and the turquoise sea, typical 19th century buildings with narrow cobbled streets and charming harbor crowned by a 13th century Venetian castle dominates the silhouette of the coast.

The beautiful crusaders village Bellapais located just on the outskirts of the town with stunning views of the coast is one of the most important places to visit in this area. Bellapais area is under protection, therefore most buildings are small, low rise and surrounded with large beautiful gardens offering a picturesque atmosphere. The 13th century Abbey perched in the steep slopes of the mountain rages on the heart of Bellapais Village is one of the many beautiful monuments to see. The abbey is well kept and is home to many annual national and international Classical musical events.

The old town has small artisan shops, cafes and tavernas offering traditional food with spectacular views of the coast. Cyprus has always been popular with artists and writers and it was in the peaceful setting of the beautiful 13th century Bellapais Abbey that Lawrence Durrell wrote his “Bitter Lemons of Cyprus”. The stunning fairy-tale castle of St. Hilarion, perched atop the rocks of the Besparmak Mountains over 2,000 feet above Kyrenia, is rumoured to have been the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
