Tuscany

A picture postcard of rolling hills, vast fields and of course some of the best vineyards in the region, Tuscany is a sensational place to stay. Its stunning rural landscapes are best explored on a leisurely walk or energetic bike ride.

Medieval towns sit proudly on hilltops, including the wine town of Montepulciano is renowned for its pop-up wineries and for producing “vino nobile”, one of Italy’s best red wine. Tuscany’s most famous wine region of Chianti is a must for wine lovers and makes for a romantic day out exclusively for couples.

There is so much more to Tuscany than just countryside and vineyards. Explore historic sites like the fortified walled town of Volterra with its medieval frescoes. The Piazza Grande, a 14th-century Palazzo Comunale and clock tower offers incredible views of the surrounding countryside.

The cities of Tuscany are ideal for culture vultures to visit, with their stunning architecture, famous sights and world-class art. Take a day trip to other famous nearby including Florence, Pisa and Siena; each are no more than an hour and a half away from each other. Florence displays some of the world’s best Renaissance art and architecture including Michelangelo’s "David" statue. Discover the Medieval city of Sienna, adorned with culture, theatres and grand piazzas or head to Pisa to see the world-famous leaning tower. Lucca is another historic centre, surrounded by ancient walls, rustic churches and the Piazza dell’ Anfiteatro.

Uncover the rugged Apennine Mountains and Elba island’s beaches in the Tyrrhenian Sea or visit the hidden coastal resort of Castiglione della Pescasia, with a 15th century castle, small beach and a picturesque working harbour adorned with yachts.

Tuscany is a gourmet destination like no other – locals are passionate about their fresh, seasonal produce. Tuscan cuisine places great emphasis on the “slow food movement”, for growing organic local produce, creating simple uncomplicated dishes, encouraging a farm to the table experience. The Conti Di San Bonifacio farmhouse is a favourite hotel of ours at Long Travel, set in acres of Tuscan countryside it is an excellent romantic location for discovering the charms of Tuscany.
