There is a definite buzz in the air about Reykjavik. It must surely be one of the most fashionable places in the world to take a city break, so if you haven’t visited yet, then it’s high time you planned your holiday in Reykjavik now. Set in the south west of Iceland, on the shores of Faxa Bay, it is the world’s northernmost capital. One of the things which sets this bustling metropolis apart is its close proximity to nature. It surveys the Atlantic Ocean, with a backdrop of distinctive volcanic mountains. Just a short drive takes you out of the city and into a world of geysers, waterfalls, hot springs and glaciers, where all signs of volcanic activity bubble under the surface. Make sure you make time to relax in the thermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon.
If you’re visiting in winter, head out of the city and away from the light pollution to see the northern lights and experience the real Icelandic countryside. Take a tour of what is known as the Golden Circle to see bubbling geysers and spectacular waterfalls, including Gullfoss waterfall. See the the famous Blue Lagoon and the natural wonder of the Thingvellir National Park steeped in folklore or travel by boat from the city harbour for a whale-watching expedition.
