Lake Saimaa

Home / Finland/ Lake Saimaa

Between us, Lake Saimaa is Finland’s best-kept secret. It is an area of immense natural beauty and the ideal place to get away from the stresses of everyday to kick back and simply relax.

Lake Saimaa is Finland’s largest lake, surrounded by fragrant pines and a labyrinth of 13,000 tiny islands, making it the world’s fourth longest freshwater lake in Europe. The water is so pure that in some places is even drinkable. The forests surrounding the lakes are home to a wealth of wildlife and have nature trails around the area, ideal for keen ramblers.

Lake Saimaa in the summer, is a wonderful place for a refreshing dip. Take a boat over to the town centre of Savonlinna to wander around the shops and cafés. Summer enjoys long days of sunshine, in contrast to winter however it is the perfect time to witness the beautiful northern lights over the snowy landscape.

Finnish cuisine is sure to be a highlight of your holiday in Lake Saimaa. Wild berries and mushrooms grow in the forests and fish is caught fresh from the clear waters of Lake Saimaa and served in many local restaurants. Those with a sweet tooth will love the delicious local pastries ‘lörtsy’.
