DISCOVER THE MAGIC OF HELSINKI
Helsinki is one of the world’s greenest capitals. It is a vibrant seaside city surveying an archipelago of over 300 islands. It is compact and easily explored on foot, which makes it a very relaxed place to holiday. A city break in Helsinki is a chance to unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life in the midst of beautiful nature.
Helsinki is a lively city with plenty of nightlife from buzzing bars to great restaurants. It has become known for its foodie scene with pop-up restaurants and delicious street-food now commonplace. Its cuisine is based around fresh local ingredients such as fish, game, mushrooms and berries. Helsinki is known for its romantic Art nouveau architecture inspired by its rich Finnish literary heritage.
Helsinki’s archipelago of tiny islands is part of what makes it so special. One of its most popular sights is Suomenlinna, an island sea fortress, just a 15 minute ferry ride from Helsinki’s Market Square. It was constructed in the 18th century as a naval base, when Finland was part of the Swedish kingdom and is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the summer, many people head out to the islands for days at the beach or for walking and jogging in the beautiful surroundings .
One third of Helsinki is covered by green spaces. Its central park and forests spread out from the city centre and just a short bus-ride away are the stunning national parks of Sipoonkorpi and Nuuksio. In the winter, you can do as the locals do, rent some cross-country skis and explore the parks and forests on skis or visit one of the local outdoor ice-skating rinks, try sledging or even walking on the frozen Baltic Sea. Ice swimming may be a step too far for most, but steaming in a public sauna is always a great way to relax.
