Masseria Rossella is an agritourism hotel with exceptional food, in Piana Degli Albanesi in Sicily near Palermo, but feeling a world away. A special spot for a country estate and hunting lodge makes this the perfect place to relax, to eat delicious food & drink in amazing views.

About 25km from the infamous Corleone, less than 20km from the incredible Ficuzza Wood Nature Reserve and 12km from Piana degli Albanesi, off the road, down a long dusty unmade track, Masseria Rossella stands 700m above sea level, overlooking the Scanzano Valley, with great swathes of farmland, as far as the eye can see. Once a hunting lodge, built by the Dara Barons, who still run it to this day, it is now an important 65 hectare farm, which produces 12,000 litres of olive oil each year. Producing much of their own food, the family also has cows, for ricotta and other cheeses, and they grow most of their own vegetables. Guests can enjoy (and buy) olive oil, jams, their very special artichokes and tomatoes in oil and other produce. Food served is delicious and an authentic example of agritourism. The cuisine is typically Sicilian and amongst the best we have ever eaten, on the island. Based on genuinely Sicilian ingredients and seasonal produce, you are in for a treat.

A fortified manor house, with a typical central courtyard or “baglio”, Masseria Rossella looks nothing from the outside. But, the moment you step through the gateway, into the “baglio”, you know that you have come to somewhere special. It is easy to understand why this is one of Italy’s protected historic buildings. The lawned courtyard has the most beautiful and enormous white mulberry tree, at its centre. Chairs and tables are scattered, in groups, under its shade and in the sunshine, and guests quickly “chill out”, enjoying the lazy, relaxed atmosphere of the whole place.

The Dara family has renovated Masseria Rossella with great taste and style. Retaining most of its original features, including the family chapel, the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the comfortable lounges and reading room make them an ideal place to read a book, listen to music, or simply relax. The small, cosy dining room is full of atmosphere and, on warmer days, guests eat out on the little bougainvillea-clad terrace, or in the courtyard. There are just nine rooms and, situated around the building’s pretty “baglio”, they are rustic and traditional in style, with simple iron beds and country furniture.

We think that Masseria Rossella is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun, the birdsong of a myriad of different bird species, and, of course, really good food and wine. You will be stunned by the spectacular views and the glorious landscape. You can take a refreshing dip in the wonderful pool – a short stroll through gardens, down a stepped stone path about 100m from the courtyard, will bring you to a wonderful lawned terrace on which sits the pool. Sheltered on three sides, it opens up, like a huge window, on the beautiful scenery, with breathtaking views to the lake below and the woods beyond. For the more energetic there are mountain bikes provided, to explore the surrounding Sicilian countryside and the woods. Canoeing, horse-riding, cooking lessons, wine tours are amongst some of the other activities offered by Masseria Rossella.

The garden overlooked by the room is very nice, there are three towering mulberry trees and around the pool, olive groves and fragrant eucalyptus. The pool is large and the kids loved it. The staff was very kind, the breakfast generous with warm hot chocolate cake which was home baked and tasted mouth-watering. Even at dinner we were served good, wholesome food and great house wine. – Josephine, Monmouthshire
