Agritourist apartments in amazing castle, near sea & mountains & wonderful town. Michael really enjoys the company of Villa Tommaso's congenial hosts and the "quality, slow food experience " of Castelbuono.

We love the small town of Castelbuono. Apart from the sheer beauty of its setting, it is quaint and picturesque, a delight to stroll around and a paradise for foodies. Castelbuono is also not far from Cefalu and the sea (about 13km) and is in the heart of the Monti Madonie National Park, so is surrounded by towering mountains and lush green valleys. It really is lovely.

On the outskirts of the town (about 1km), Villa Tommaso is an amazing and historically important early 19th century castle, surrounded by beautiful countryside. In one hectare of grounds, dotted with olives, a rose garden and lofty palms and oaks, it has magnificent views towards the town and mountains, which soar up behind - within a 10 minute car ride, it reaches 1,300m above sea level.

Villa Tommaso apartments have been particularly authentically restored, with natural stone, dustings of pink and terracotta, and Diego and Cinzia, have chosen a minimalist style of furnishing to echo their castle's simplicity - terracotta floors, rustic wooden furniture, walls in typical local plaster and lots of natural materials. The five agritourist apartments, off a central courtyard, are very tasteful and of very good quality, although not over furnished. There is a welcoming and comfortable communal reading room, which remains beautifully cool in summer. Diego has built a barbecue in a delightful, walled courtyard, where there are tables and chairs for al fresco dining. Past clients recount tales of pleasant evenings, spent eating and drinking (!!), in the company of other guests.

Take your deck chairs wherever you please, but our favourite spot, on a hot summer's day, is under Villa Tommaso's huge oaks, where there are seats and hammocks to enjoy the shade and lovely views.

Awarded 5 agritourist stars for the olive oil Diego produces from his groves and for the historical importance of the building, so many clients really love this special place for the wonderful location of Villa Tommaso and the special kind of hospitality - all are certainly charmed by Diego's genuine warmth, kindness and personal attention.

The charming and fascinating old town of Castelbuono, set in the heart of the Monti Madonie National Park, is surrounded by towering mountains and lush green valleys. Renowned as the Park's most well-kept town, its 13th century castle, sturdy and strong, watches over the steep, crooked streets with their tumble of houses, fountains and piazzas. Only 73km from Palermo, 20km from Cefalu and 13km from the sea, they say its climate is never too hot and never too cold, so it was always a favourite choice of Italian aristocracy. Its picturesque centre is perfect for a "passeggiata ", and the excellent restaurants offer Castelbuono cuisine, which is really superb.

Annabelle Thorpe for The Times on Saturday wrote, "Villa Tommaso is a spectacular castle converted into simply furnished but comfortable apartments, with hammocks slung under ageing oak trees."

"OK - so if you want to be picky you might say that this is more fortified house than castle, but who am I to argue with a Sicilian?!! Either way, we loved it."  Frank & Lisa, Bradford

"Castelbuono is wonderful. Our hosts were kindness itself and the apartment was very nice." Colin & Jennifer, St Albans
