Elegant Art Nouveau boutique hotel, top notch service and food. Helen loves the country house feel, the food, the comfy beds, the terrace & the stunning views. Ray loves the romantic, refined atmosphere. Annie loves EVERYTHING!! This is five star (without the 5th star!!)
A fine and gracious old villa, in a stunning location, overlooking the sea, the fabulous Villa Cheta is a real favourite of ours and we stay as often as possible. The food is as good as you'll find in Italy. The delicate flavours and tantalising dishes, and the list of Italian wines, are a dream. Exceptional staff offers smiling charm, particular gentility and impeccable service. The atmosphere is relaxing and intimate.
About 1km from the village of Acquafredda di Maratea, overlooking the coast, this small boutique hotel has been awarded its four stars for being one of those "special places ", with a combination of ingredients not easy to find elsewhere - style; wonderful location; attentive and personal service; elegant surroundings and sunny terraces; and last, but not least, superb food and wine. The Villa Cheta has them all!
Stefania and Piero, the charming owners, can usually be seen, in the background, keeping an eye on every last detail, shyly and discreetly. They and their exceptional staff offer guests a very special kind of welcome into the relaxing and intimate atmosphere of the Villa Cheta. Maria, the welcoming chief receptionist, is kind and helpful. Stefano and Cinzia, also on reception, add a smiling charm and a particular gentility, whilst Angela, the head waitress, is quietly efficient, adding to the impeccable service. In fact, everyone is delightful.
With a real eye for period and a knack for introducing modern facilities into a character property, each bedroom is unique, but all have style, with antique furnishings, clean, crisp fabrics and lovely bathrooms. This flair continues in public areas, where you will feel as if you are in the home of a noble family, surrounded by bits and pieces that are precious to them. It all feels very personal, comfortable, tasteful and in keeping.
We love the small, pebbly beach below the hotel. Worth walking the quite steep, stepped path, (approx 195) to the inviting sea, the walk back up keeps you fit and gives you a good appetite! In high season, quench your thirst at the small bar or chicken out and take the free shuttle to some of the nearby beaches.
This really is one of our favourite hotels and we stay at least once every year. If you combine this hotel with any other, our advice would be to stay at the Villa Cheta last - it's an impossible act to follow.

Amanda Morrison wrote for Red Magazine, "Like a giant pink wedding cake, Villa Cheta presides over a cliff, delivering sunsets good enough for a Hollywood movie. Sunny terraces are the perfect spot for relaxed reading, and there's a small pebbly beach immediately below the hotel. It also has a divine restaurant. "
"Just a quick line to say thank you for another lovely holiday. We very much enjoyed our few days in the Villa Cheta - as you promised, great setting and delightful staff - we hope to return. " Derrick, Camberley
Elisabeth Mahoney wrote for the Herald Magazine, "By far the loveliest base for a stay in Maratea is Villa Cheta, a charismatic 140-year-old belle epoch house that once belonged to nobility. It retains a classy elegance, with antique-filled rooms and dreamy views of the coastline and bougainvillea-lined terraces. " She continued, "On summer evenings, dinner is served in considerable style outside and, with moonlight shimmering on the inky black sea, it's hard to imagine a more romantic setting. "
"I don't think I've ever ticked all the excellent boxes on a questionnaire before. We didn't think that the Hotel Villa Cheta could possibly be as nice as your brochure suggested - but it was. The building is lovely; the staff delightful; the position amazing. As for the food - I'm running out of superlatives, but it was absolutely delicious. "

"We had a great time in Basilicata. The staff at Hotel Villa Cheta were fantastic and we really enjoyed the food. We ate some wonderful desserts, so were almost grateful for the 195 steps down to the beach! The region was fascinating, the coastline is so dramatic and the Christ figure was more impressive than we had imagined it would be. " Heather, Newcastle-Under-Lyme
