Architecture, Temples and Castles
in Southern Italy
|
 |
|
|
Impressive
Greek and Roman temples, ornate Baroque towns, unique ‘trulli'
houses, Moorish tangles of white streets and Norman castles
straight out of a story book.
What
is one of the first things we think of about Italy? Fabulous
architecture and historic monuments, pretty little towns
and every corner crammed with thousands of years of history.
The south of Italy, Sicily and Sardinia are really exciting,
because, touched by more civilisations, including Arab,
Norman and Greek, than Tuscany, Umbria and other regions
in the north of Italy, they are still largely undiscovered
and hold so many surprises.
Where
else can you see architecture like it? Stone trulli houses
unique to Puglia, with their conical roofs; Abruzzo, well
known in Italy for its remote hermitages built into cliff
faces; Sicily is reputed to have more Greek temples than
Greece, as well as some of the most exquisite Roman mosaics
in Europe. Taormina in Sicily has an ancient Greek amphitheatre
with a backdrop of a volcano; Baroque architecture is so
prevalent in southern Italy that the city of Lecce is referred
to as the “Florence of the South” and let's not forget the
prehistoric stone “nuraghi” of Sardinia.
