At
Long Travel we are passionate about Southern Italy, Sicily
and Sardinia. We have been involved
in tourism in these areas for 22 years and we feel a responsibility
to try and protect certain areas as much as we can, and
in turn, maximise the benefits that tourism can bring. Due
to our ongoing commitment to the areas we work in, we have
been awarded 4 Sustainable Tourism stars. AITO is the first
tourism industry association to incorporate a commitment
to Sustainable Tourism into its business charter.
The ‘trulli’ houses in Puglia are a case in point - twenty
two years ago they were falling into disrepair with collapsed
roofs, flattened walls and many were no more than a pile
of stone surrounded by olive trees. For the past ten years,
we have restored a number of these unique properties re-introducing
local craftsmen to the almost forgotten skills needed to
carefully renovate the building and surrounding area. More
recently, Ray & Annie Long have built two wonderful
swimming pools which are cleverly landscaped, so as not
to disturb the surrounding countryside, they have also planted
in excess of 200 olive and fruit trees in the grounds of
the trulli; as these mature, guests will be able to pick
and eat the fresh produce daily.
Over
time, more and more people have been visiting the area and
some, after spending time in a restored trullo, have decided
to buy and renovate their own.
We have been able to put them in touch with many of our
contacts in the area and by employing skilled local craftsmen
and using the highest quality, locally sourced materials,
we have been able to ensure that sustainable travel does
not mean that you need to compromise on the enjoyment of
your holiday or the quality of your accommodation.
We
know that many of you want to contribute towards responsible
tourism and one good way of doing this is to offset
the carbon emissions generated by your flights.
