Laura loves Il Cilentano's delightful spot, close to the harbour, perfect for boat trips - she likes boats - and shops - she likes shoes, too! The James Bond style spa will blow you away!

A couple of minutes' walk from San Marco centre, right on the sea, overlooking the small harbour, Il Cilentano is in a fantastic spot. It is virtually covered with climbers and colourful flowers, and, tucked around the corner, its own sandy and pebbly cove is delightful.

Il Cilentano's restaurant serves wholesome, local and traditional cuisine. It is proud of local Cilento produce and goes all out to provide it. There is usually a whole array of olive oils and up to fifteen local breads. Fresh fish is brought in every day by a local fisherman. In good weather, guests eat outside, under the vine-clad pergola, where an abundant buffet lunch is also served, (usually from June to September), with an array of wonderful dishes, including fresh fish, grilled meats and seasonal vegetables. The buffet is really impressive and we can never resist it. In cooler weather, meals are served in the large restaurant.

The swimming pool, surrounded by trees and shrubs, is between the hotel and the sea, and the poolside bar serves drinks and snacks. The children's pool, in the "park", behind the hotel, is where some games and activities are arranged.

The state-of-the-art-spa is amazing. Goodness me! We’ve seen some spas in our time, but never one as incredible as this. Capitalising on the really stupendous location, it has been celebrated as the best in the south, if not the whole of Italy. James Bond-like, but really welcoming and user friendly, it is absolutely stunning and not to be missed.

Rooms and apartments are all of a similar style. Simple, yet stylish, with nice shower rooms, and, decorated with fresh, Mediterranean colours and colourful, contemporary artwork. Most have a balcony or terrace, with sea-views. Some have glimpses towards the hills and the mediaeval town of Castellabate, too.

Pathways lead through the pinewoods, behind the hotel, to the headland, where the scenery is magnificent, or guests can hire boats to discover the natural beauty of the Cilento's coves and beaches, or, to go scuba-diving and explore the underwater ruins and marine life.

We think that Il Cilentano has four stars for its location, spa and food - a stone's throw from a small resort, right on the sea, with beach and swimming pool. The spa will blow you away. The wholesome, local and traditional cuisine, in abundance, is really good - we know! So, it's a place to go if you love to eat and be pampered. The activities for children make it a good choice for a perfect family holiday, too.

Il Cilentano is ideally placed for ambling into the town square for a spot of shopping, dinner or a morning coffee. San Marco di Castellabate has a busy, working harbour. Charming and picturesque Santa Maria di Castellabate, just along the coast, has a pretty harbour and lovely beach. A small resort, but lived in all year, it is a joy to stroll around. Both resorts have small shops, restaurants, pizzerie and gelaterie and can be lively in the summer, but sleepy at other times. In high season, local skippers usually run boat trips to Amalfi or Capri and there is a weekly market. Mediaeval Castellabate, with its interesting historical centre and 10th century basilica, sits on a hill. Only half an hour from Paestum, and close to the wild and densely forested mountains of The Cilento National Park, this area is perfect for exploring South Campania. The coastline, largely undiscovered by the British, has slopes of silvery-leaved olive trees and intensely green, luxuriant vegetation stretching right down to the turquoise blue, crystal Tyrrhenian Sea and some of the best long, sandy beaches in Italy.
