Ray loves the contemporary design - it has real style - and, mention a garden and he's there! Annie loves Porta Felice's corridor lights - she wants some!

In one of the oldest parts of Palermo and close to the sea-front promenade and marina, Hotel Porta Felice is about a ten minute walk from the Quattro Canti and within easy walking distance of some important palazzi, places of interest and Palermo's famous Botanical Gardens. An area buzzing with city life, there are plenty of great cafes, bars and restaurants nearby. It is a real mixture of old streets and quite trendy businesses.

The former 18th century palazzo has been given a swish, elegant ultra-modern, designer feel and it is really attractive. Rooms are comfortable and spacious for a city hotel and all have a small balcony. The rooftop breakfast room/restaurant, with floor-to-ceiling glass, is bathed in light and has views over old Palermo.

Porta Felice's superb spa is a real oasis after a day's sightseeing. A starlit-ceilinged small, bubbly hydro-pool is fabulous. "Emotional " showers, a Turkish bath and various types of massage will restore the body and spirit in a really calm and tranquil environment - a satisfying and enjoyable contrast to Palermo's hectic city life.

Porta Felice is a very impressive little hotel - we love it.

PALERMO

Nowhere is Sicily's exciting past more evident than in its capital city. Originally Phoenician, then a Carthaginian colony, built on a natural harbour and beneath the towering Monte Pellegrino, its setting is as dramatic as its chequered history. At the heart of the city is the Baroque Quattro Canti (Four Corners), which divides the historic centre into four parts, all of which are accessible, on foot, from here. Wherever you go, around every corner, behind every decaying façade, there are wonderful things to discover - Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, mediaeval, Baroque, Art Nouveau - in a maze of time and style. Palermo hints at the mystery of its way of life, with an atmosphere, which excites and feels exotic. It is a truly enthralling city.

“We were made to feel welcome immediately on stepping through the door. The reception staff were all helpful on giving advice & directions to guide us round the city. Our room was beautiful and the décor throughout the hotel imaginative.”  David & Lynda, Malvern

Roland Ellison, commerical editior of the Mirror online wrote...

Arriving late on a Saturday night, with 12 hours to kill before we picked up our hire car, we only had enough time for a cursory glance at Palermo. After the bus journey from the airport, we checked in to our nicely air-conditioned room at Porta Felice. A quiet Sunday morning was ideal for a stroll around the fountains and features of the city, and our favourite spot was the Piazza Vigliena, or ‘Quattro Canti’. Never has a simple crossroads been so glamorous. Our next stop was lunch at the old haunt of the notorious Mafia boss ‘Lucky’ Luciano. Antica Fococceria S Francesco is a no-frills self-service canteen that serves cheap and cheerful Sicilian street food - our first taste of authentic Sicilian fare.
