Masseria Montelauro is stylish & laid-back, with cool, chic rooms. This Salento masseria is a fabulous blend of boutique chic and traditional character.
In Puglia's Salento, about 45km from Lecce, and only 2km from beautiful Otranto, a wonderful town, right on the sea, with a castle, a fascinating cathedral and a tangle of narrow medieval streets, as well as clifftop nightclubs, Masseria Montelauro sits in its own secluded grounds. Feeling quite exclusive, it is quintessentially Pugliese. The whitewashed stone masseria seems to sparkle in the sun and is built around an inner courtyard, with lovely gardens and orchards, a shady wisteria-clad pergola, a stunning pool and lots of comfy places to sit and relax. The whole atmosphere is unhurried and charmingly laid back and, every time we visit, we love it more.
Pale blue shutters against sparkling white walls hint at a cool chic, which pervades the whole masseria. Inside, it is equally stylishly simple and elegant. Against a backdrop of traditional stone floors, star and barrel-vaulted ceilings, furnishings are a mix of contemporary and antique, with a Moroccan twist. Rooms are cool and very white, with wrought iron and wooden furniture, and shower rooms are very tasteful. The cosy bar adjoins a large, comfortable sitting room, with open fireplace, sumptuous sofas and easy chairs - a perfect place to relax.
Food is served in the rustic chic restaurant, which spills out onto the delightful terrace, in good weather. A buffet lunch is usually available, near the pool, and this is a very relaxed affair, a real freshly made treat - and it's well worth being tempted! Dinner is often a set menu and is equally delicious - or guests may be tempted to pop into nearby Otranto, famous for its fresh fish and seafood, and where there are countless restaurants.
This is a romantic place, with an air of relaxation and sophistication, and it feels discreet, exclusive and really relaxed.
