In the heart of Magna Graecia and near Metaponto's temple, Matera, Taranto, the Pollino National Park and even Francis Ford Coppola's home town of Bernalda, about 6km away, this impressive and elegant masseria is also close to lovely, sandy beaches, two good golf courses, and is only about 10km from the border with Puglia. It is an ideal location for golfers, sightseers or simply for those wanting a relaxing holiday.
Set on a thriving working farm of 250 hectares, grain, olives, vines, apricots, kiwi, peaches, citrus and other fruit are cultivated and guests can enjoy (and buy) the farm's own extra virgin olive oil, wine, honey, marmalade and fruit.
Owned by two brothers, who are busy with the day-to-day running of the farm, the masseria has been left in the tender care of Caterina, who clearly adores it and gives guests a warm and smiling welcome.
Renovated with superb taste, this is an impressive masseria - comfortable, cool and elegant. As you go through the door, into a huge sitting area, you will be impressed. One of two former "granaio " or grain stores, its proportions are immense. The brick barrel-vaulted ceiling, stone floors, enormous fireplace and large arched windows, which give delightful views over the hills, with comfy sofas and antique furniture, make a spectacular centre-piece. The breakfast room/restaurant is very pleasant and doors lead to a courtyard and lawned areas, where guests may dine al fresco, in summer. The cuisine is based on traditional, Basilicatan home-cooking, using some of the very ancient Lucanian recipes.
Our rooms are off the large sitting room and all are charming and characterful. The three first floor rooms are very spacious, with antique furnishings, delightful shower rooms and large terraces, with views over a tiled roof, to the countryside. The four ground floor rooms are similar in size and style, but have small gardens - although these have no views, they feel more private.
A short walk over lawns brings you to a beautiful pool and shaded gazebo. On an elevated lawned terrace, surrounded by olive trees and with lovely views, this is the ideal spot to relax.
