Matera, famous for stone cave dwellings, is magical and surreal. This breathtakingly lovely boutique B&B is an utterly 21st century version of spacious cave-living, with spectacular quality, comfort and style.
Matera, on Basilicata’s boundary with Puglia, is world famous for its honeycomb of caves (sassi) and frescoed rock churches, threaded with a maze of winding alleys and steep stairways. Set in a straight-sided ravine, the ancient settlement is fascinating, like no other, and Unesco has designated it a World Heritage Site. Admittedly not a place for those who would find the terrain difficult, it is ideal for those searching out something different and well off the beaten track. The rest of Matera is equally worthy of a visit, its mediaeval centre filled with tiny alleyways, typically sleepy squares, chic shops and bars and spots for those stunning views over the ancient sassi.
Wind your way not very far down lanes and a stepped path, about 200m from the square and, in the heart of this secret sassi landscape, lies the truly beautiful boutique B&B L’Hotel in Pietra. Parking is about 300m away and, if arranged and booked in advance, your luggage will be transported to the hotel for you. There is a good choice of restaurants and shops within a five minute walk.
Three years of painstaking restoration and never-ending passion brought the charming owner, Roberto, and his Brazilian interior designer wife to the spectacular small and exclusive boutique B&B of today. They took an extraordinary thirteenth century rock church and the adjacent cave dwellings and transformed them into a haven of peace and tranquillity; a temple of elegance and style; and an oasis of designer comfort. The imaginative and contemporary treatment of these unique buildings shows a deep respect for the original, adapting them to modern demands with an exemplary attention to detail, which serves to enhance their splendour. Their vision is clever, utterly 21st century, and it works.
The challenge of successfully combining high vaulted ceilings, stone arches, and nooks and crannies of caves set on various levels, was not an easy one. Effectively designed lighting disguises the limited natural light and makes the whole place very atmospheric and romantic. The first surprise is the pretty little terrace outside, with views over the amazing sassi. The second surprise is the fabulous and huge cavern of the former church, which accommodates the reception, breakfast area and comfortable lounge – light and airy, with an unexpected spaciousness. The biggest surprise is the quality of the rooms and their unique style.
With honey-coloured stone and natural rock as the backdrop, the 9 rooms are sparklingly individual. Some are on two levels. Some have stone steps or spiral stairs. Some have showers or entire shower rooms in a cave. Some have original stone mangers or stone sinks. Some have ancient water cisterns on view under glass. Some have canopy beds or large beds with wooden bases. All are full of character and beautifully furnished, in perfect harmony with the setting.
Breakfasts at L’Hotel in Pietra are light and delicious. The owner and his staff simply cannot do enough for their guests.
We have to be honest, the idea of sleeping in a cave has never really appealed….until now. We like our creature comforts and have never been convinced by modernist claims that basic is luxury. Oh no….not convinced at all! At last we have found L’Hotel in Pietra, which, for us, is the perfect solution and we would stay there at the drop of a hat. It’s just fabulous.
Smallest category of room, but charming nevertheless.
Larger rooms, which can accommodate up to 4.
The Junior Suite 1007 is a large, comfortable, cave-like room on two levels. Jacuzzi on the lower level.
The Suites are especially wonderful. Both have a lounge area and can sleep up to 4.
“L’Hotel in Pietra, room 1004 – wow! Our suite was amazing; breakfasts were great and the staff lovely. Without doubt we will go back and have told almost everyone we have met since that L’Hotel in Pietra is the place to go in Matera.” Rachel & David, Banbury
