Picturesque town & mountains, manorial style, cosy ambience, great food. Michael's abiding memory of Hotel Le Gole is the food and especially the enormous steak - no there aren't dinosaurs left in those mountains, Michael!!

Just over 2km from the quaint old town of Celano, which is dominated by a massive castle and mountains, the Hotel Le Gole is based upon a mediaeval manor house and it feels utterly authentic. Rooms have a cosiness about them, with lots of wood and heavy drapes. The suites are superb and a real treat.

Family-run, the staff at this hotel are extremely friendly and helpful. Aldo and Achille, the two brothers who own it, started many years ago, with a restaurant and they have an excellent reputation for the food and wine served. Their food is usually robustly rustic, big portions, nothing fancy, and really tasty.

Now, Aldo concentrates on the hotel part of Le Gole, La Locanda Dei Priori, with his son, Gianpiero. Achille runs the Le Gole restaurant and banqueting rooms, which are in a separate building, next to the hotel. Hotel guests are served breakfast and dinner in the hotel's characterful dining room. Full of atmosphere, in summer the restaurant spills out into the charming open-air inner courtyard. Those staying half-board can choose from the a la carte menu and there is usually an absolutely fantastic antipasti buffet. Help yourselves - your eyes will definitely be bigger than your belly!

Guests of the Hotel Le Gole are welcome to eat lunch in Achille's restaurant (payable locally). The menu of the day may be hastily scribbled - the concentration is on food. To eat there is a great experience, with a roaring open fire, in the massive inglenook, when it is cold, a large TV and many local customers. It also attracts a lot of passing trade, Italians who come for its good, honest fare - always a good sign and it creates a really vibrant and busy atmosphere. In good weather, guests may eat outside, on the terrace.

Behind the Hotel Le Gole, a bridge, with a pergola of roses, crosses a little brook, to a delightful natural garden, where trees, shady arbours, and the brook with little cascades, wild irises and ducks, make a perfect evening stroll.

Abruzzo's own little secret, staying at Hotel Le Gole and La Locanda Dei Priori is a real Abruzzo experience. When they talk of tourists here, they usually mean folk from Rome!

"Everything was excellent, from locating a place to stay in the Abruzzi on your informative website, to the interesting notes you sent, to the hotel with its marvellous views and restaurant, giving excellent value for the quality of the food and helpful staff. " Graham, Guildford

"At the lovely Hotel Le Gole, I never did pluck up the courage to order a steak (having seen it, I reckoned it would take me three days to finish it!). Abruzzo can easily compete with anything in the Alps. We even had an eagle try to land on the roof of the car (not something you see every day in Hampshire!). " Thelma & Geoff, Fleet

"Yet another extremely enjoyable holiday - thank you. Our first visit to Abruzzo, but this will not be our last. We enjoyed absolutely excellent food in the three places we stayed. " Pamela & Ronald, Newark
