Art and Music in Southern Italy & Sicily |
 |
|
|
Italy
is a country overflowing with art treasures and with a rich
tradition in music. A fascinating place, it has attracted
‘visitors' for thousands of years. Just look around the
palazzi and piazze in any town, or village, dotted around
Southern Italy, Sicily and Sardinia, you will be amazed
at what you will discover.
In
contrast to the world famous Amalfi Coast with its winding
roads and breathtaking scenery, stay in one of our hand-picked
Naples hotels and visit the San Carlo opera house, which
opened in 1737 and is the oldest working theatre in Europe
(41 years older than Milano's Scala and 51 years older than
Venice's Fenice) and become enthralled by Tosca, Romeo and
Juliet or Madame Butterfly or, stroll around the cool galleries
of the Museo di Capodimonte on a warm Neopolitan afternoon
and marvel at the paintings by Raphael, El Greco and Bruegel.
If
you are a music lover, visit the Pescara Jazz Festival,
which is now in its 39th year and has hosted - to name but
a few, greats such as Bob Dylan, Herbie Hancock, Joan Baez,
James Taylor, Ella Fitzgerald & Miles Davis. Or if you
are after something a little less "international",
stay in one of the wonderful trulli houses which are scattered
around the Itria Valley, now a World Heritage Site, close
to the pretty mediaeval town of Cisternino and visit the
the Valle d'Itria Opera and Classical Music Festival, which
is held in the nearby town of Martina Franca, every July
or August.
A
real treat for classical art lovers, are the delicate mosaic
floors in the Villa Romana, close to Il Glicine in Sicily,
absolutely fascinating and surely one of the finest examples
of roman mosaics, anywhere in the world!
Maybe
best of all are the treasures that cannot be found in the
guidebooks. Scattered throughout the numerous towns and
villages of the mezzogiorno , Baroque fountains
with their Rubenesque figures, frescoed walls in a small
village church and of course the local festas ,
where you will be treated to a traditional Italian brass
band and a group of very lively octogenarians dancing the
tarantella !
Whatever
your interests, we will tailor-make a holiday which takes
full advantage of the fantastic art and music Italy is famous
for.
