Good value, comfortable apartments, in countryside, near Rome. Alison loves Il Vecchio Borgo's excellent value for money - it really exceeded her expectations.
Only 20km from Rome, which is easily accessible by car or by public transport, Il Vecchio Borgo apartments are perfect for those wanting the beautiful city on the doorstep, but a more tranquil rural oasis as a base. Also, there is so much more than Rome to visit, much of it never discovered by British visitors. Il Vecchio Borgo is 12km from the sea and lovely beaches, 15km from Lake Bracciano, and 10km from the Etruscan excavations at Cerveteri.
Hidden amidst rolling landscape, this "borgo " has been in the Pamphilj family for more than 350 years. Twenty families still live in the borgo and rely on it for their living, so, Il Vecchio Borgo is part of a tiny rural community The family lives in its Rome palazzo, which also houses the famous Doria Pamphilj Gallery.
Impressively immense proportions of Il Vecchio Borgo's grain barn, a charmingly solid-looking building, which sits majestically in its rural landscape, requires no more adornment than nature gives it. Designed with imagination, to maximise the feeling of openness and height, eight very individual, spacious, comfortable, simply but tastefully furnished apartments are on the first floor, entered from an open, colonnaded corridor. On the ground floor are a small reception area and communal lounge, as well as a laundry room.
Past clients of Il Vecchio Borgo have appreciated the ease of getting into Rome from such a relaxing, rural environment, and have loved the many places of interest - hilltop villages, castles, lakes, archaeological treasures, gardens and varied coastline - as well as the delicious fresh food, including seafoods, from the local harbours, served in the area's restaurants and trattorie - and so do we.
Designed with imagination, to maximise Il Vecchio Borgo's feeling of openness and height, eight very individual, spacious and comfortable apartments are on the first floor, entered from an open, colonnaded corridor.
Every apartment is self-contained and on two open levels. The lower level consists of a sitting/dining room, with double sofa-bed, kitchen corner and bathroom/shower room. In the larger apartments, there is a single bedroom on this level and a second bathroom/shower room. Some bathrooms are equipped for the disabled. In most of the apartments, there is a spiral staircase leading up from the sitting room to a small sitting area, overlooking the garden. In all apartments, there is a wooden staircase up to a double/twin gallery bedroom. Other spaces/sleeping areas are more flexible and could be on other galleries with divan beds, or in the sitting room with sofa-beds, or in an extra single bedroom with pull-out bed.
The apartments are furnished simply, but tastefully and with comfort and relaxation in mind. All have views over surrounding countryside and they have televisions. The kitchen area is minimal, with small sink, refrigerator and microwave oven; small electric hotplate; and come with crockery, cutlery and equipment for the preparation of simple meals only.
"Il Vecchio Borgo was a perfect location & a great suggestion for access to Rome while still enjoying the Italian countryside. Getting in & out of the city was easy & comfortable on the train and, for a family, the villa was definitely a better option than staying in Rome itself. " David & family, Fareham
