Agritourist apartments & pool, unspoilt countryside, great food. Paul loves Angela and the Il Paesino owners, who are the nicest people in the world.
Il Paesino is close to so many hidden secrets of Sicily, as well as some more famous ones. Near the spectacular limestone Pantallica Gorge, with its prehistoric tombs and cave dwellings from the Byzantine period, it is a paradise for walkers. Also quite nearby is the Nature Reserve of Cava Grande. Sicily's version of America's Grand Canyon perhaps, it is an even deeper gorge and visitors have to sign in before they are allowed to descend it! They tell me it's worth the effort just to see the stunning clear water natural swimming pools at the bottom, but I will let others be the judge of that!
The historically significant town of Palazzolo Acreide is 18km from Il Paesino. The lively, Baroque town is very atmospheric, with its Greek theatre, old streets and squares, good restaurants and really friendly locals. Only about 30km from Siracusa and Noto, Il Paesino is well situated for exploring the whole of this Baroque south-east corner of Sicily.
Il Paesino is a great example of agriturismo and the 50 hectare farm cultivates 2,500 olive trees. In a truly lovely, rural and unspoilt part of Sicily, the delightful apartments are in the ancient farmhouse and its stables and outbuildings. Scattered around the well-kept gardens and painted in vibrant blues, reds and yellows, they create the perfect picture. Inside, they are simply furnished, but are tasteful and of good quality. The lawns lead down to the large swimming pool, which has lots of sunny terraces and is surrounded by conifers, lemon trees and olive trees.
Il Paesino's beautiful agritourist restaurant, in the grounds, is where guests may book breakfast or dinner. Well-known in the area for traditional Sicilian cuisine, most vegetables served are grown on the farm, and food is locally sourced, or home-made by the lovely Angela, who also manages the agriturismo. A delightful place to enjoy a good meal (and boy, is it good!), there is even a glimpse of the sea, in the distance, from the restaurant terrace.
The adorable Giuseppe, Antonio and Nuccio own the farm and are very kind and hospitable people. They live at Il Paesino for some of the year (with their friendly dogs), and when they are not on hand guests are cared for by the lovely Angela. Passionate about their grounds, they tend every little corner. Antonio is a dead ringer for Burt Lancaster and Giuseppe is Picasso's double - how surreal is that in the middle of the Sicilian countryside?
If you want a peaceful and relaxing holiday, in a rural setting, with easy to reach places of interest and fantastic food on your doorstep, Il Paesino is the place for you.
