Rooms & villa not far from sea, lovely spot, amazing food. Michael loves Il Casale as a great base for exploring. Paul loves the impressive main farmhouse, the quality and the "yummy " food.
Il Casale is an agritourist property, run by the delightful Federico, his wife Maria-Antonietta, his sister Clotilde and her husband, Umberto, and it is a real family affair. Surrounded by the farm and woods, which are home to wild boar, falcons and countless other wildlife, the imposing 19th century farmhouse is down a long track, through 7,000 olive trees. It is equal distance from the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas and, in an elevated position, its grounds have views towards the sea, in the distance. Huge palms line the front of the house, where shaded seating areas enjoy fabulous views of the valley and the olive groves, which stretch almost as far as the eye can see. Well-kept lawns surround the house and an inviting pool lies behind it, on a sunny terrace. There is also an ancient chapel.
The small entrance leads into a large, central courtyard. The dining room overlooks the courtyard, where meals are sometimes served, in the summer. On the first floor, the bedrooms, one of which is in the old tower, have antique and rustic style furnishings, and are of good quality.
The food is delicious, authentically Calabrian, based on traditional dishes, using fresh and seasonal ingredients. Eat here once and you'll want to dine every night - we did. Every year, the farm produces 50,000 litres of an exceptional olive oil and much-prized very special olives from just half its trees. Ray thinks Il Casale's olives are truly the best he has ever tasted. With recipes featured in the book of Matthew Fort, that famous English Vespa-riding food writer and critic, you certainly have a treat in store. Locals also appreciate the cuisine and they often pour in for Sunday lunch especially, creating a really lively atmosphere.
"We are back from the most fantastic holiday and the high spot for us all was the beauty, the hospitality and the warmth of the family in Il Casale. The food was out of this world, served with genuine grace & attention to detail. We adored the cooking course and we had a very happy time. " Ellie, Oxford
"The food at Il Casale was simply incredible, exactly as described by Matthew Fort. " Dave, London
Food critic and writer Matthew Fort stopped off at Il Casale, near Pianopoli, on his vespa-riding journey through Italy. In his book "Eating Up Italy" he wonders why "....the British are so obsessed with the cooking of Tuscany and Umbria, which seemed limited and boring compared to the food of Calabria." He goes on to marvel at the fare produced for Sunday Lunch and the locals' capacity to eat it all! He fell in love with Il Casale and the family who run it and his book features several of their recipes - well worth a read.
"Cannot praise the accommodation and staff too highly - their dinners are also excellent. " Harry, Matlock
“We had a wonderful time! What a lovely family and what a charming place to stay! Mama’s cooking was superb and we had the advantage of two of their excellent celebration meals for First Communions." Pamela & Michael, Horsham
“A fascinating building in a stunning location and we couldn’t’ve asked for a warmer welcome” Andrew & Emily & family, London
“The place is just beautiful, photographs could never do it justice. The food was amazing and we were very sorry to leave – a week just wasn’t long enough. Thank you for having this wonderful property on your books.” Denise, Barnet
