Fresher than fresh fish, right by the sea and great value. Ray loves the great location and fantastic food. Annie loves Rosa, who really knows her stuff.
Close to the small village of Acquafredda, and really tucked into the Basilicata coastline, this delightful family-run hotel is in a splendid location, nestling into the curve of its own bay, right by the sea and backed by cliffs. You could probably tuck Positano into this bay and it would attract thousands of visitors. Instead, relatively few find this hidden coastline and it is a real treat. The beach is shingly and lovely. The sea is wonderful and crystal clear.
Quite Mediterranean in style, the Hotel Gabbiano rooms are bright, modern and functional. There is a comfortable bar area, with a shaded terrace and the dining room overlooks the sea. Pretty gardens stretch along the beach, to the beautiful swimming pool, creating a very private oasis of greenery, pool and sea. What more could guests need?
Rosa, the owner, controls every detail of her hotel, with passion. Staff have worked for her for years. Stefano and Lucia, on reception, are always there with a smile and a helping hand. The "bagnino" Salvatore helps on the beach. Only family, with a love for what they do, could produce the sort of excellent food that comes out of the kitchens, which is why Rosa has her brother-in-law as head chef. Even the head waiter is her nephew!
Rosa's roots are Calabrian and her cuisine is a wonderful mix of what is best in Basilicata, with a hint of Calabria. The food is genuine, traditional and wholesome, based on the very best of fresh ingredients. The menu features fresh fish - so fresh that it is delivered by a faithful group of fishermen, right to Rosa's door (to her beach, anyway). You may see them delivering their catch - all of it - to the hotel. Rosa takes the lot, from swordfish to sea bass. So, it's pot luck, depending on the weather and the catch. The menu will offer what is fresh, whatever has arrived direct from boat to kitchen - if it isn't caught fresh that day, you don't get it! No wonder it's so good! You don't need to be fancy with such raw ingredients. You just need to know how to treat them right - and Rosa and her chefs certainly do. She surely serves the best fish along the coast.
