Paul loves everything that Costa Azzurra does so generously - the gardens, the pool and, of course, the weekly barbecue. Not far from the airport, it is also a great choice without a car.

If you love family-run places, in panoramic locations, close to beautiful beaches and with lovely, well-tended gardens and an inviting pool, Romano's Hotel Costa Azzurra and cottage are for you. Very personally run, Romano's two lovely sons, Luigi and Cristian, are as passionate about the hotel as their father is.

Only about 12km south of Tropea, on the famous Capo Vaticano, you will be spoiled for white sand and crystal, turquoise sea. Less than 1km from the beach, down a good, but very steep road, you can walk, or take the free minibus transfer. Only a short walk from the railway station, it is ideal if you do not want to hire a car, especially in high season, when it is also easier to access excursions. There are also lots of little beaches to explore under your own steam, and you can take boat trips around the coast. Venturing even further, there are trips to Reggio Calabria, to see the famous Riace Bronzes, and even Stromboli, to watch its volcanic activity.

You will bask in Romano's pride and joy - his garden is his great passion and it just teems with shrubs and flowers. You will have the sea as your backdrop as you sunbathe by the pool, or sip your drinks at the poolside bar. You will enjoy music and piano-bar some evenings in the summer, and Romano's Wednesday barbecue evenings are a huge hit with past clients (we've enjoyed a fair few too!). An excellent buffet and lively traditional music, sitting under the stars, make the evening great fun.

We really love the family-run atmosphere, the great location and Romano’s delicious and wholesome Calabrian food. Breakfasts are quite simple, but dinner is always a treat of flavours and home-made goodies. The chef usually makes fresh bread and fresh pasta every day – you can’t get better than that. We think that it is really good value for money and we always enjoy the typically three star service, admittedly a bit haphazard at times, but always with a smile! The rooms and cottages may be simple and functional, but the setting and gardens are like a tropical paradise. The beautiful beaches are another bonus.

This hotel represents really good value for money and, as there is enough, within walking distance, to keep you amused if you're not inclined to venture too far - little bars, an ice cream parlour, eating places and the railway station for further afield - it is ideal for clients, who want a holiday relaxing around the pool or on the beach, with or without a car. Expect to be tempted, as we always are, by Romano's little shop next door, selling all things Calabrian. You will find pate in jars, hot spicy salamis, cheeses, and liqueurs like liquorizia, grappa and chocolate with chilli.

Jane Hayward wrote for Woman & Home magazine, "....a lovely, family-run village hotel. You'll eat, drink and sunbathe to a turquoise Capo Vaticano backdrop. It's effortless la dolce vita! Paradisical gardens wrapped around an inviting pool are the hotel's USP, and its simple, spotless rooms are a comfortable base."
