Ultra-modern boutique luxury, jaw-droppingly beautiful, amazing views, fantastic food. Romantic & very chic.
You could easily drive past the entrance to Casa Angelina's steep driveway and never know it's there, even though it's only a hop, skip and a jump (or about 80 steps!) from quaint Praiano. Just over 4km from Positano, it is a secret hideaway, built into a cliff, completely hidden and secluded, and with the most incredible views of the Amalfi Coast and Positano.
The epitome of ultra-modern luxury, with its fair share of electronic gizmos, this boutique hotel will blow you away. It is unlike anything else on the Amalfi - sumptuously comfortable, contemporary and white, filled with vibrant coloured artworks and "starlit " ceilings. Light, sun, sea and sky form an inescapable backdrop, through floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Even the lift is romantic!
For us, Casa Angelina's supreme design and uniqueness has so much to do with colour. The first impression is that it is so, so gleaming white and perfect and the wooden floors are so polished and shiny. However, the eye is soon attracted addictively to the inspirational flashes of colour and the fantastic artwork. It's hard to believe that anything will draw the eye away from those wonderful sea views, but the art and sculpture are equally spectacular, and made all the more striking, when it has a backdrop of such blue, blue sea. The Cuban artist, Sosabravo, collaborated with the masters of Murano glass to create glass sculptures, which are truly sensational. We would SO love to have one! You will happen upon the little bronze frogs of "The Frogman ", Tim Cotterill, who was originally a Leicester artist. Hanging from shelves, peering into glass bowls, they will make you smile - they make me smile, just remembering them! Mexican born, Sergio Bustamante's lifesize bronzes are so beautiful that they bring a tear to the eye. We want one of those too! I could go on……more than a hotel, Casa Angelina will dance with your emotions, in so many ways.
You will see sleek, clean, contemporary lines from the sumptuous lounges and bar, to the fabulous "restaurant in the sky ". Casa Angelina bedrooms have a real designer feel - very white, with furniture by Sorrento craftsmen, Parisian terrace furniture, Philippe Stark in the shower rooms, and with enough electronic gizmos to blow your mind! Romantic terraces, seemingly everywhere, make the most of the dramatic sea and Amalfi Coast views.
Quite honestly, the pool is perfectly formed, but a little small. Do we care? Absolutely not! There is another superlative indoor heated pool and spa, which more than makes up for it. The little cove and beach is a joy too. The lift takes you most of the way, but then there are about 200 steps - great for building up an appetite.
The food is delicious and irresistible, fabulous to look at AND tasty. Taking the traditional and local recipes and ingredients and giving them a modern flourish, there is real fine dining in the restaurant - gourmet cuisine fit for any modern gastronome. Less formal cocktails and lighter refreshments, served by the Bar Marrakech and on the terrace, are equally appetising. Long Travel clients can enjoy the complimentary buffet breakfast/brunch, which is plentiful and perfect for a long, lazy morning - it goes on until 11 o'clock.
Another astonishing difference between Casa Angelina and many other five star hotels is the attention to detail in personal service. Of course, impeccable service is to be expected, but this is something else. From the moment guests arrive, they are greeted in a friendly and very personal way. More reminiscent perhaps of the sort of personal service and careful consideration that one gets on the best Maldives islands, it is the little, often complimentary, touches that are unexpected and absolutely charming. The aim is to make guests feel as if they are "at home " and the atmosphere is relaxed and not remotely stuffy - quite the contrary.
Casa Angelina is unique. Tranquil and utterly romantic, it is also relaxed and unpretentious. It feels young and hip, but actually is great for everyone. Goodness knows, we're not young…. and we're definitely not hip…. but we adore it.
